Volunteering

November 2012

During my senior year of high school, I had an opportunity to take a bus with my fellow classmates to the St. Lawrence Homeless Shelter. I was able to interact with the residents and build on my knowledge of low income individuals. The first half of the day, I was assigned to work in the thrift shop on site, where residents were able to purchase discounted clothing. The last half of the day, I worked in the kitchen to prepare and hand out lunches to the residents in the cafeteria.

I volunteered at Boca Raton Regional Hospital and enjoyed interacting with the nursing staff and patients while I was there. I was able to escort discharged patients out to their cars, take flower/gift deliveries to the patients' rooms, and escort family members to the correct floor.

The Lord's Place

November 2016

During my psychiatric clinical, we were able to visit the Lord's Place for our community  psychiatric health component of our clinical rotation. I was able to shadow a community NP, who worked full time at the Lord's Place. It was interesting to see how creative nursing professionals can be when it comes to caring for people in low-income populations. She taught us that sometimes you will encounter practice areas that don't have the high tech medical equipment and supplies that hospitals do, but you can make do with what you have.
