HOBY Leadership Conference
In 2011, I attended the Hugh O-Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) program at Lynn University. It was a great opportunity for me to meet other high school students from different parts of Florida and collaborate with them on group meetings/activities. We had to perform group skits demonstrating different leadership styles in our performances along with rationale about which styles are least and most effective.
I have not been involved in any official leadership roles at this point in my life. I do feel as if I am a leader in my clinical rotations out of the other students assigned to my group because I am usually the first one to have the confidence to meet all my patients and ask the nurse if she needs any help. I'm always willing to learn new skills and take on tasks I have never done before with confidence. Many students in my clinicals have been timid when it comes to interacting with nursing staff as well as patients. I choose to get on the floor and start performing patient assessments and taking vital signs on my own. I have led a group discussion on communication styles in Professional Development III. Additionally, I have been the main coordinator in every group project I have been assigned to do in nursing school. I assign each person a part and organize all the parts to create a finished presentation.
