Professional Organizations

I think it is important to be involved in professional organizations because they can expand my nursing knowledge and keep me up to date on the most recent changes in our health care system as well as changes made to the nursing discipline (ethical, legal, evidenced based practice). Additionally, joining professional organizations gives you an opportunity to network with nurses from all different states and gain there support and guidance, which would be valuable for me as a new graduate nurse. Furthermore, being in a professional organization can serve as a platform to voice concerns that affect nursing practice. The voices of many nurses are heard louder than the voices of one nurse. I am currently member of the Student Nurses Association (SNA) and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). Additionally, I was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor's Society for my outstanding accomplishments as a scholar.

In the near future, plan to join Sigma Theta Tau International Honors Society of Nursing and the Florida Nurses Association. I believe Sigma Theta Tau (Greek for love, courage, and honor) will facilitate my transition from nursing student to registered nurse by providing career opportunities, developing my professional skill set through the most up-to-date nursing research, and interacting with other STTI members that can support me throughout my nursing journey. Since I plan on primarily practicing in the state of Florida, I want to join the Florida Nurses Association (FNA) to use as a resource for the most current nursing practice guidelines specific to Florida. Also, joining with FNA allows access to career opportunities through their online resources and college credit discounts if I choose to further my nursing education.
